Apartment Tenant Rights
Tenants living in an apartment may have specific tenant rights in addition to the general rights that apply to all residential tenants. Landlords may be required to maintain common areas, such as pool areas or clubhouses, to ensure that they are clean and safe and available for use by residents of the apartment. Tenant rights may also include the right to have shared walkways or hallways maintained and cleared of snow or other debris when necessary. A tenant's lease should clearly outline the rights and responsibilities of those living in an apartment. The apartment landlord or property manager is usually required to inform a tenant of any rule changes, and tenants with a valid lease may have certain rights regarding rule changes. Both federal and state laws exist to protect tenants from discrimination and harassment, and tenants who live in a federally subsidized apartment have special rights under the Federal Fair Housing Act.
