A sublet contract is a legal contract outlining the terms of a sublet, also called a sublease. When a tenant who is currently leasing a rental property must leave the property for an extended amount of time, for travel, work, school, or other reasons, that tenant may decide to sublet the property to a third party. The third party, also referred to as the ﾓsublessee,ﾔ would live in the property and pay rent during the original tenant's absence. A sublet contract is generally signed; the contract outlines the terms of the sublet. Before signing a sublet contract, the landlord or property owner must be notified and given time to ask for more information before allowing or denying the sublet. Some landlords prefer to use their own sublet contract, while others may leave it up to the tenants. A sublet contract should clearly state both the responsibilities of the sublessee and the original tenant, also referred to as the ﾓsublessor.ﾔ
