Governor Signs Assemblyman Eng's Bill That Improves Landlord-Tenant Disputes

Assembly Member Mike Eng, Nov 28, 2007

Sacramento, CA – Assembly Bill 1126, authored by Assemblymember Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park) was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  AB 1126, which is sponsored by the California Law Revision Commission (CLRC), clarifies and improves the procedures for acquiring information that helps landlords and tenants settle their differences expeditiously.

“AB 1126 will make sensible changes that promote prompt and fair resolution of landlord-tenant cases,” stated Eng.  “Enacting this bill will greatly help landlords, tenants, the courts, and the public generally.”

AB 1126 implements recommendations from a CLRC report titled Time Limits for Discovery in an Unlawful Detainer Case (October 2006).  CLRC, which was created in 1953 and has the responsibility to discover defects in California law, believes AB 1126 will have significant benefits from eliminating disparities and streamlining the system.  The bill is also supported by the Judicial Council and directs them to implement new provisions.
